As well as all the wonderful birds, Costa Rica has many fauna that you would only find in a zoo in the UK. I loved this crocodile, apparently about to eat a large stone. This one was by the Tárcoles River near its Pacific outflow.
Apparently, this long river is the most contaminated in Costa Rica. You would not expect to see large numbers of crocodiles on such a river, indeed they were once under threat. But we saw lots from the main road bridge at Tarcoles.
Boat tours up the river are big business around here, to see the wildlife and feed the crocs. So I guess the locals ensure that the population is adequately fed.
A good example of tourism actually helping individual species, hopefully also to the benefit of the ecosystem.
